Classroom Community Field Trips
Every other week, the students participate in a community field trip in order to better generalize the skills they have learned in the classroom. They go to a variety of places to work on skills such as: locating items in a store, determining if they have enough money to make a purchase, paying for items or food, counting change, asking for assistance from an employee, and time management. Students are also practicing how to appropriately socialize and properly utilize public places.
The week of a scheduled community outing, your child will bring home a worksheet to complete with your help. This sheet will require each student to make a shopping list or menu of what he/she is going to purchase while on community. Your child will also have to complete the amount of money he/she has to spend. Each student will use this form to help prepare for the trip.
Prior to the trip, the teachers will review what occurs at that particular community location and what the expectations and goals are for the trip. For example, when attending the community trip to Yorktown Mall, the teachers will review the use of the mall map to locate particular stores within the mall, following a schedule and meeting somewhere at a specified time, money management, appropriate socialization and expected behavior for the mall environment.
After returning from community, the teachers review with the students in a variety of ways. The teachers may help the students further examine their receipts in order to better understand the cost of what they purchased. They may show the students videos that were taken during the trip of students completing tasks while on community. They may also ask students to role play particular situations that occurred on the outing.
The main goal of our community outings is to provide our students with real-life opportunities to apply what they have learned in the classroom. With our guidance, the students can practice these skills and become more independent in a variety of community settings.
