Three-Year Re-evaluations
What is a Re-evaluation?
By law, if a student is receiving special education services, he/she must have a re-evaluation every three years. Students grow a lot in three years! If a team determines at the Domain Meeting that further testing is required, the team meets again after the evaluation process to share and discuss the evaluation results, determine if the student is still eligible for special education services, and discuss which services (if any) are appropriate for the student to receive and which placement would be most beneficial to the student.
Typically, on years that a student requires a re-evaluation, the re-evaluation meeting is combined with the annual review meeting. This cuts down on the number of meetings and ensures that the student's new annual goals are based on the results of his/her evaluation.

What happens at this meeting?
- Each team member who completed an assessment reports his/her findings. The rest of the team has an opportunity to discuss the results and ask questions.
- Based on the results, the team determines if the student still qualifies for special education. If so, the team decides which eligibility or eligibilities (e.g. learning disability, autism, other health impairment) are most appropriate.
- The team discusses which services (e.g. social work, occupational therapy, speech/language) the student should receive and how many minutes the student needs.
- The team then reviews the student’s current placement and determines if it is still appropriate for the student's strengths, needs, and goals.
- The team creates appropriate goals and objectives to address the student’s needs.
- If applicable, the team reviews and updates the student's Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
- The team also discusses areas such as state testing, extended school year services, transportation, and transition planning.
