What is a Domain Meeting?
A domain meeting happens when a student is up for their 3-year re-evaluation or when a team member/parent requests an evaluation. The domain meeting starts the evaluation process.
Who is part of the team?
- Student
- Parent/Guardian(s)
- Special Education Teacher(s)
- General Education Teacher(s)
- Related Service Providers (Speech/Lang., Social Work, OT, etc.)
- Administration
- Private provider (if requested by parent/guardian)
What happens at a Domain Meeting?
- The student’s current progress is shared with the team in the areas of Academic Achievement, Functional Performance, Cognitive Functioning, Communication Status, Health, Vision, Hearing, Motor Abilities, and Social/Emotional Status.
- The team determines if they have any questions about the student's abilities in these domains and if additional data are needed.
- If the team determines that no additional data are needed, no evaluation is conducted.
- If the team determines that additional data are needed, an evaluation is opened for the relevant domain(s). For example, the team may have questions about the student's speech/language abilities and would open the Communication Status domain. The team only opens the domain(s) for which they need additional data. The team determines which team members will be participating in the assessment and share what the assessment will look like (e.g. informal assessments, formal assessments, classroom-based measurements, checklists, rating scales, etc.)
- Once parent/guardian consent for an evaluation is obtained, the team has up to 60 school days to complete their evaluations.
- An evaluation meeting is scheduled for the end of the 60-day period to review evaluation results.
